Why It Matters
Tires are non-biodegradable. Discarded tires collect rainwater and become breeding grounds for pests. Burning them releases toxic fumes into the air and soil.
An estimated 350 million tires are discarded each yearin Canada and the United States. Roughly 70–80% of every tire is reusable rubber — the rest is recoverable steel and fibre. When done right, virtually nothing has to end up in a landfill.
